Call for Applications - Postdoctoral Research Position - Ethnography of Urban Critical SituationsThematic Project – Observatory of Evictions: interdisciplinary dimensions of risk in times of climate change and housing crisisProf. Dr. Vera Telles (FFLCH/USP) is offering a Postdoctoral Fellowship to conduct research under her supervision, titled Critical Situations: Actors, Processes, and Disputed Urban Frontiers. This is a FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellowship linked to the project Evictions Observatory: Interdisciplinary Dimensions of Risk in Times of Climate Change and Housing Crisis, coordinated by Professor Raquel Rolnik. The project is supported by the FAPESP Thematic Research Grant (2023/12851-7) and will be hosted by LabCidade, in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo.1 About the Project and the PositionThis Thematic Project aims to launch a new phase of the Observatory of Evictions, which for over a decade has identified, mapped, and analyzed threats, evictions, and forced displacements of individuals and groups in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region. In this new phase, theoretical and methodological challenges are addressed to identify, measure, and characterize territories and groups threatened with eviction due to being deemed "at risk." It also seeks to conceptualize "risk" as a device for socio-territorial intervention within the context of the intersection between environmental and housing crises. This postdoctoral research position will focus on qualitative research and fieldwork aligned with this project, employing an ethnographic approach in territories facing immediate or potential risks of forced displacement.1.1 General Objectives:Unravel the operational mechanisms through which dispossessions and forced displacements occur in situated – and critical – contexts of urban territories, examining the interplay of actors and power relations involved in these processes, as well as the effects on practical circumstances of life and the configurations of fields of conflicts and disputes on/over space.Investigate governance modes and power regimes in these territories, identifying political boards that bring to the forefront the operators of illegal markets, police forces, political networks, and other actors managing and disputing these areas.1.2 Specific Objectives:Analytically outline the social and urban trajectories of residents of these places in "critical situations."Conduct a detailed reconstruction of the interplay of actors and power relations in contexts of urban insecurity and precarity.Perform ethnographic observations of risk situations, socio-environmental conflicts, and involuntary displacements.2 Profile and Requirements for ApplicationBoth Brazilian and international candidates are eligible.
