Job Responsibilities: Provide on-site engineering of station facilities, working in coordination with fulltime Engineering staff.
Station facilities include:Boilers, furnaces, and hydronic heating systemsPlumbing and electrical systemsEnergy conservation measures and methodsFire Protection systemsAnalog Control SystemsDirect Digital Controls (DDC)Power Generation facilitiesWaste Water Treatment facilities and processesWater Desalinization and Purification facilities and processesPerform engineering investigations of operational issues, facilities, and equipment.Conduct construction reviews and facility assessments, and evaluate Code compliance.Serve as a technical resource for Trades personnel.Responsible for the design, budgeting and execution of small engineering, maintenance/construction/modification projects as part of the Configuration Change Request (CCR) process.Responsible for scope definition, specification, budgeting, and write-up of project proposals for larger engineering and maintenance projects.Responsible for facilities assessments encompassing the following engineering disciplines: Civil, Structural, Architectural, Mechanical, DDC Control and Electrical.Submit Work Orders or define, write up, and propose small or large projects as required to address deficiencies found.Advise Facilities Management on the status of engineering and maintenance activities and assist in the development of programs and budgets.Provide Engineering assistance on Construction matters such as design and specification clarifications and changes, Code issues, as-built drawings, field engineering, start up, and scheduling.Assist in the development, implementation, and supervision of the Preventive Maintenance and Work Control programs.Coordinate scheduling and interagency notification of scheduled Preventative Maintenance tasks involving required or potential utility service interruption, such as power outages.Provide documentation as necessary to ensure legal and contractual compliance.Work to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments.Timely response to emergency service calls during and outside normal working hours.Maintain effective communication between departments and represent department as needed at operational meetings.Interact with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person.Accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involved.Accomplish tasking working from Job Plans, verbal information, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, documents, vendor/manufacturer manuals, and applicable specifications and codes.Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and create or revise SOPs as needed.Perform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions including wind and extreme cold weather.Routinely utilize independent judgment and discretion to identify potential issues and solve problems.Proactively identify any unsafe conditions, hazards, or Code violations and communicate them effectively.Work directly with other departments to plan and complete tasking.Learn and utilize computer-based labor, material, and maintenance tracking applications.May deploy to remote research support facilities for day trips or extended periods (McMurdo Only).Interpret schedules, design drawings, specifications and diagrams to carry out tasking.Routinely inspect worksites and evaluate staff tasking.Handle confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.)
in accordance with management policy and with the highest degree of professionalism.Communicate professionally, both orally and in writing.Assist with the ordering of resupply materials for the department to maintain adequate inventory on station.Occasionally utilize the assistance of other station personnel to complete tasking, or assist other trades or departments with their tasking.Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements.Participate in Work Center Safety Program and participate in ASC safety objectives.Participate in community programs such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (station clean-up), "GASH" (galley clean-up at Palmer), and recycling efforts.Perform other duties as required.Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:
• Bachelor's Degree in facilities related Engineering discipline or similar field is required.
Five additional years related engineering experience will be accepted in lieu of engineering degree.
• Minimum four years of increasing responsibility in facilities engineering activities to include investigation of maintenance issues, management of change, minor construction projects, and definition of new project work and project proposals is required.
Expected Skills and Competences:
• Thorough knowledge of building systems, specifically HVAC.
• Experience in construction and maintenance of commercial and/or industrial facilities.
• Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, and diagrams.
• Minimum intermediate level computer skills with MS Office Suite experience to include Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Be able and willing to learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications.
• Possess prior computer experience and be able and willing to learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications.
• Possess the competencies, willingness, and ability to perform the duties of position.
Preferred:
• Professional Engineer (PE) registration strongly preferred.
• Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree.
• Knowledge and experience with one or more of the Station facilities as outlined under General Duties.
• Knowledge and experience with project design, specification, preparation and review, project scheduling, and project cost estimating.
• Knowledge and experience with Preventive Maintenance and Work Control systems.
• Experience with Maximo or other Computerized Maintenance Management System.
• Experience with Alerton Ascent Compass Software.
• Experience with Alerton controls.
Physical and/or Other Requirements:
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods.
• Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica.
• Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer.
• Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF.
• Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
• Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
• Must participate in community programs, such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
