POSITION: Hazardous Waste Supervisor
SEASON: Austral Summer (Oct 2025 - Feb 2026)
LOCATION: McMurdo Station, Antarctica
SECTOR/DEPT: Six Mile, LLC Antarctica
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordinate with Hazardous Waste Manager to set priority for departmentEnsure all incoming employees receive proper training, and maintain a log of this informationCoordinate with other departments to ensure efficient pick up and processing of hazardous wasteDaily tasking and supervision of departmentAssist with writing mid- and post-season evaluation for the crewAttend weekly meetings in the event of Hazardous Waste Manager's absenceConduct community Waste Briefs or other informational sessions if necessaryTroubleshoot any issues that arise and elevate them to Hazardous Waste Manager as neededPicking up hazardous waste and associated paperwork from various departments on station, assuring quality of information on Hazardous Waste Identification Sheet (HWIS)Process waste accordingly.
This includes marking, labeling, weighing, and storing the drums or items into a shipping container.
Updating the HWIS form with any required informationDaily use of a drum dolly, pallet jack, banding equipment, power tools, shovels, and other tools.Using the proper PPE for various tasks (correct gloves, respirator, safety glasses, etc.
)Perform certain classification qualitative testing on items (pH testing, flash point testing, etc.
)Lab packingSafe operation of a M4K (Pickle)Accurate input into hazardous waste tracking databaseQuality check all shipping containers and correct discrepancies immediatelyFollow all JHA's, and update them if neededAssist the Solid Waste Department as neededDuring Vessel and Tanker Operations, work 12 hour shifts, either day or night shiftActive member of the Spill Response Team:Be on call 24-hours a day for approximately one week of each monthBe able to supply manual labor (shoveling) for several hours if neededWrite spill reports, if applicablePosition requires constant physical activity, including bending, consistently lifting and carrying 50 - 70 lbs, reaching and grippingAgrees with and adheres to the Standard Operating Procedures and tasking responsibilities of the Waste departmentAble to work in a team unit composed of diverse personalitiesDisplays self-motivation in physically challenging and atypical work environment; position is comprised of approximately 90% outdoor taskingAble to maintain flexibility and positive attitude in a dynamic, fast-paced work settingPerforms duties in support of Operations Division metrics (as provided by supervisor)Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly, affected by this position's work activitiesComplies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals.
Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentationWorks to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitmentsResponsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplacePerform other duties as requiredReports to Hazardous Waste ManagerREQUIREMENTS: 2 years (or Ice seasons) of Waste Management experienceCollege degree (2 additional years of experience will substitute)Strong computer software experienceAble to lift 50 pounds consistently and wear a respiratorValid Driver's License and PassportAbility to pass background check and drug screening.
A prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment.
Candidates hired for this position will be required to complete; online forms, written forms, fingerprint cards and provide additional details and information as requested by National Science Foundation (NSF) Personnel Security.PREFERRED: 1 year of Hazardous Materials shipping/characterization or reporting experience OR 2 years of Environmental remediation.1 year of supervisory experience1 quarter of college General ChemistryCollege degree in Chemistry or Environmental ScienceOSHA HazWOPER 40-Hour, currentFamiliarity with power tools and machineryEquipment operating experienceEDUCATION: College degree (2 additional years of experience will substitute)
