The AvaTax Engineering team at Avalara is responsible for designing, building and supporting our flagship determinations platform.You, as a Senior Software Engineering Manager at Avalara, will be hands-on leading an AvaTax engineering team responsible for designing and driving a highly scalable, reliable, secure and performant global tax calculation engine.

As an engineering manager, you will be responsible for the daily management and support of the software engineers on the team including technical guidance, review and weekly 1-on-1s with the team members.We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Engineering Manager to join our development team and manage a team of highly skilled and motivated engineers that would design and build components for our innovative tax compliance solutions.Lead, grow, and maintain an engineering team of 6-8 engineers working on a common Agile Scrum teamLead the system design and overall software development lifecycle for a set of core roadmap itemsParticipate in systemwide architecture discussions and facilitate integrations across engineering teamsDevelop custom APIs and middleware to facilitate data exchange, synchronization, and real-time communication between different systems.Implement robust error handling, data validation, and data transformation mechanisms to ensure data integrity and accuracy during integration processesOptimize integration performance and scalability to accommodate a growing number of clients and increasing data volumesDesign and implement new features and maintain existing functionalitiesBuild and lead POCs to demonstrate technical feasibilityFocus on security aspects, observability, scalability, and telemetryPerform code reviews and ensure coding standards and practices are followedImplement and follow agile/scrum processesCollaborate with other teams to solve cross functional challengesOptimize code to improve application efficiencyWhat You'll Need To Be Successful Bachelor/master's degree in computer science or equivalent10+ years of experience in software design and development, with a proven track record of successfully leading teams in building software integrations3+ years leading a software development team including technical and administrative responsibilitiesExceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.Good understanding of Object-oriented programming languagesGood understanding of eCommerce system architectures, APIs, data models, and authentication mechanisms.Good experience with RESTful APIs, JSON, XML, and other data interchange formats.Familiarity with authentication protocols like OAuth and token-based authentication.Experience in working in an Agile team with hands on with TDD, BDDExcellent problem-solving skills and a demonstrated ability to navigate complex technical challenges.Experience of working on AWS Cloud and DevOps (Terraform, Docker, ECS, etc.)
