We accomplish our mission by managing an impact incubator to accelerate early-stage social enterprises; and by managing impact funds to invest in profitable enterprises and looking to scale their operations to have a stronger and more sustainable social impact.
The accelerator is financed by donations and grants; the impact funds are financed by investment capital.
Founded in 1997, we are a leading early-stage impact investor in emerging markets, where we have financed 223 enterprises that have improved the lives of 910,000 vulnerable individuals.
**Position Overview**:
The Portfolio Manager will support the investment strategy for a portfolio of high-impact social enterprises in Brazil's Southeast and Northeast ns of Brazil.
They will oversee NESsT's "due diligence" review of enterprises, analyzing their financial sustainability and impact potential and proposing investment recommendations for review and approval by the NESsT investment committee.
This position will support enterprises once they enter the NESsT portfolio, including assisting the enterprise team in validating their business models and developing their management and governance, commercial and financial aspects, as well as systems, networks, and strategies needed to grow their businesses for more significant impact and scale.
Additionally, the Portfolio Manager will identify and manage the mentoring network to provide technical and business advisory assistance and help leverage other investors and donors offering blended capital needed by the enterprise.
The Portfolio Manager is also responsible for communications-related activities to increase the visibility and positioning of NESsT and the portfolio among key stakeholders.
They will also be responsible for implementing and supervising NESsT's Racial Equity Entrepreneurship Initiative within their portfolio.
NESsT launched this initiative to address systemic racial inequities by improving financial inclusion for Black people in Brazil.
The Racial Equity Entrepreneurship Initiative provides funding and business assistance to impact-driven enterprises creating employment opportunities for Black people and helping them to access more capital and scale their businesses.
This initiative offers job training, counseling, and placement services to the Black community.
This initiative will identify and invite two additional enterprises that provide employment opportunities to Black individuals from low-income backgrounds to join the portfolio.
The position will report to the Country Director in Brazil.
They will also work closely with local and international team members to continue to develop and improve NESsT business services and impact methodology and contribute to the growth of the social enterprise sector.
**Key Duties & Responsibilities**:
Portfolio Development:
- Lead training as necessary
- Develop the Investment Memo for presentation to the Investment Committee.
- Develop maps/reports about the sector.
- Implement business services, focusing on strengthening the management and governance, marketing and sales, operations and financing, and social/environmental impact of each enterprise.
- Assist Country Director in coordinating volunteer engagement and learning opportunities for corporate partners.
- Manage and organize events related to the portfolio.
- Lead the program of mentoring and coaching entrepreneurs.
- Provide ongoing management, monitoring, evaluation, impact measurement, and reporting on new and existing investments.
- Overview, coordinate and monitor financial and legal operations: contract development, grant disbursement, follow-up, and variance measurement of activities and expenses made by enterprises supported by NESsT.
- Manage internal systems related to knowledge management and data management and develop reports (technical and administrative) regarding the portfolio's performance or due diligence members.
Communications:
- Help portfolio enterprises develop a communications strategy and plan to position them with existing and potential clients and NESsT enterprises with the overall social impact sector.
- Actively work to position NESsT as a social impact investor with a strong track record in growing social enterprises and creating dignified employment.
Activities include producing press releases and articles to communicate impact to the broader audience, media monitoring, and maintaining regular communication through Facebook, newsletters, and the NESsT website (as required in current projects and as needed).
