The Center for Conservation Biology (CCB) is a research and education organization at William & Mary and Virginia Commonwealth University dedicated to bird conservation. The CCB's mission, through all of its diverse programs, is to provide the global community with the information needed to drive thoughtful, science-based conservation, educate and train the next generation of conservation scientists, and make lasting contributions to the natural world through critical thinking, innovation, and ground-breaking research.Position SummaryThe Center for Conservation Biology is seeking a Crew Lead to conduct Wayne's black-throated green warbler surveys, nest searching and monitoring, and lead a crew of 2-3 technicians in southeast Virginia from March 03-June 30, 2025.Wayne's warbler is a genetically unique form of black-throated green warbler (S. virens virens) that occurs in a disjunct breeding range along coastal swamps in the mid-Atlantic region. This project provides an opportunity to better understand Wayne's warbler range and abundance in Virginia as well as describing nests and other demographic information that is not well documented.The field site for the project will be areas surrounding the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge (GDSNWR). Surveys will occur from the road and by boat, but the candidate will venture into swampy habitats when nest searching, monitoring, and attempting to capture birds. Housing will be provided at USFWS bunkhouse at the GDSNWR and private housing near Chesapeake Virginia. Pay is 18.00/hour (~$2,688/month).Minimum QualificationsExperience identifying eastern songbirds by sight and sound.Ability to navigate using GPS and use a standardized survey protocol.Experience with mist netting and/or banding.Physically capable of accomplishing the work and willing to work early mornings.Preferred QualificationsExperience leading a field crew.Experience operating a chainsaw.Experience with canoes, kayaks, or motorized boats.Experience with mist nets and bird banding.Conditions of EmploymentThis position requires driving or riding in cars and boats to field sites.The ability to work outdoors daily, and at times, under rigorous conditions.The ability to perform physically strenuous duties and lift/carry 50 pounds.A valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.This is a non-exempt position, eligible for overtime.William & Mary values diversity and invites applications from underrepresented groups who will enrich the research, teaching, and service missions of the university.
