The United Nations Development Coordination Office and Resident Coordinator System (UN RCS) are the cornerstone of a coherent and well-coordinated UN development system capable of delivering integrated support to countries across the SDGs.
The United Nations Development Coordination Office (DCO) serves as the secretariat for the UN Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG) – 34 UN agencies, funds, and programmes working on development – at the regional and global level.
DCO provides managerial and oversight functions for the Resident Coordinator (RC) system.
131 RCs lead UN Country Teams and coordinate UN support to countries in implementing the 2030 Agenda.
The position is located in the United Nations Resident Coordination Office (RCO) in Brazil and reports to the Resident Coordinator, with direct supervision of the Development Coordination Officer, Head of RCO and Strategic Planner.
Within delegated authority, the Senior Development Coordination Officer/Economist will be responsible for the following duties:
Coordinates evidence-based Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) analysis in support of a shared understanding by the UN Country Team (UNCT) of sustainable development trends, challenges, and opportunities in programme countries.
Oversees the provision of substantive advice on innovative economic and SDG policies to Resident Coordinators (RC) and UNCTs, as well as to national counterparts in government and other relevant partners.
Leads the development by the UNCT of a new generation of SDG programmes with a strong investment orientation and focus on acceleration towards achieving the SDGs.
Directs SDG knowledge generation and management.
Minimum Qualifications:
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in economics, sustainable development, public policy, business or public administration, social sciences, education or related area.
A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development policy, economic analysis or project/programme management in the context of development cooperation or related area is required.
Experience in econometric modelling, scenario and data analysis and research is required.
Experience in the United Nations system or a comparable international organization is desired.
Work experience with Brazil and/or Latin American economies is desired.
Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
Fluency in Portuguese is desirable.
Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
This position is temporarily available for 364 days.
